1994's GOP aka...The Pleasure Police

from Brian
See the Yahoo story:House of Pain: GOP's Class of 1994

The 94 Christian GOP class has so vividly illustrated what I had written about in “The Pleasure Police.” That is that sexual suppression brings tension and afterwards a heightened passion to consume what is withheld.

Reminisce with me if you will. Do you recall the GOP’s outrage with Bill Clinton’s sexual escapades rolling out the red carpet for the 1994 GOP’s “Contract with America?”

The 92 Presidential campaigns had Buchanan & Robertson addressing Christian themes at the Republican National Convention with Bush criticizing Democrats for omitting God from their platform.

The link provided above has proven that “God” didn’t help the Republicans and since Clinton & the Democrats didn’t rub God in our faces; we won’t address their peccadilloes here! This also goes to show the efficacy of the “power of prayer.” The suggested prayer of Lord “lead us not into temptation” (sexually) has resounded into “be sure your sin will find you out” for the Republicans! Perhaps they should have left God out of the equation altogether! They make a great case for the desirability of secular politicians rather than the “saints!”

Getting closer to home: it seems to me that when the faithful ask for “divine intervention” or protection over your libido; your really saying that your shirking responsibility for a potential rendezvous you have in mind!

While I think a secular dominated society is more desirous than a religious one; I prefer to see Christians living up to their faith because the world would be a better place if they did! Humanist’s accept responsibility for their actions while Christian’s ask for divine help with theirs. Doesn’t the 94 class of the GOP illustrate that: 1) their God went AWOL 2) it is about time for secular humanists to run for office 3) prayer is ineffectual…especially in the political arena 4) That Matt. 7:1 “Judge not, that ye be not judged.” This is one verse where Jesus makes sense in the secular world!

Pete Stark made history by becoming the first member of congress to go on record as a nontheist. What that really means is that God is “on the hook” for all of the rest of congress. Think of it this way: Every time a politician has ethical question issues…are we going to need to start asking “God, what happened?” I hope you see my point!

Hmmm ... I wonder whether the God bit that politicians like to drag up from time to time is not their red herring? History bears evidence of this slippery tactic.
Appealing to "the religious right" (sic) attracts the voters who might increase the ballot percentage, create an image of "holy governance" and a subliminal link that "we are all in this together and I (your votee) need your spiritual input?
Sounds fishy to me!
Then again, such an appeal might also be their linus blanket. A comfort wrapping that gives a regressed feeling of infantile security. Maybe, this is a preparation to then blanket that which should not emerge? After all, if God tells world leaders to go to war ... halleluja!
Who knows and who is responsible?
Away with parades of religiosity that is but a road to a so-called Court of Appeal that hides behind a misty smokescreen; chop down the personalised totem pole that demands allegiance devoid of any feedback; remove the parasites who prey on the vulnerable with their psychodramas framed in the television and from pulpits, and place the Bible where it well and truly belongs - alongside literature that has age restriction warnings.
The God bit continues to destroy and confuse.
